Before proper streaming boxes there were Home Theatre PCs and universal remotes (with macros)!
This was when I first designed these software buttons for my Logitech Harmony remote (as shown below).
Originally I used the Microsoft Media Center software, but after switching to mac, I started using Remote Buddy software on my 2010 Mac mini to control Plex, EyeTV (DVR software), Hulu and iPlayer, this was a dream come true. As a student I legally recorded 300 movies in HD with EyeTV, deleted the commercials and added meta data and cover art. This way I could legally grow my movie library. I converted with “Handbrake” to be able to watch on my phone and later on Apple TV using the native player (before Plex was available for Apple TV). I still have the full collection and there is a few of the very old classic movies I still like to stream from my 2010 Mac to my Apple TV 4K since they are not available on streaming. I must admit, however, that I do not miss recording movies and ripping DVD’s. As a student with more time than money it made a lot of sense at the time ![]()
